8 Days of Summer....I Mean Sheila

Over a thousand photos and copious hours of editing and torturous selection I present to thee only (only….sheesh) 30-ish photos of the best week of the year so far.

For indeed our household was blessed with a visit from our wonderful Sheila…one of the bestest friends a human could ever have….oh alright Onyx requests that I include her in that too.

I tried to limit myself to only a few photos per day and for my facebook minions there be the lot on there.

We started our first day jumping on a small ferry boat with the pupster and running off to the old fortress of Suomenlinna (direct translation: Finland’s castle)

We moseyed around the little 18th century villages and got hit on by amorous drunks until our feet were about ready to fall off.

IMG_7297

However….that said I did have ingrown toenail surgery only four days before so we kinda moseyed at a snail’s pace.

IMG_7247

That is until we found the battlements and like pathetic little children we devised many a play-date with kiddos…

 involving pirates and smugglers

… and ransomed Swedish aristocrats.

IMG_7362

After four seemingly short hours we boarded the ferry back to the mainland while Onyx collapsed in a heap of exhaustion.

After a trip to the temple where I was actually able to do most of the work in Finnish (whoot! Finally learning this monster of a language) we loaded this boat and started off on an international ship journey back to Tallinn, Estonia!

IMG_7412

Money is a touch tight at the moment and a very very generous friend gave us tickets to Tallinn for only €4 round trip!

IMG_7439

The notoriously camera shy (though baffling as to why cuz she’s beautimous) Victoria joined us.

IMG_7427

In all I spent less than €20 including food and souvenirs!

IMG_7480

Cheapest International trip ever!

We were lucky to have amazness sunshine:

In the market square is a fully operational medieval pharmacy. It’s been there since the 14th century and tempting as the remedies were we managed to resist.

Dried deer penis anyone?

IMG_7515

A visit to a lake where Onyx finally swam without me “assisting” by throwing her in the deep end…

IMG_7772

…was followed by a weekend away at yet another generous friend’s summer cabin

Complete with traditional wood burning sauna....which is glorious.

IMG_7814

We finished the week by running away to Turku (the old Swedish capital of Finny)

IMG_8014

We had arrived and just so happened upon a parade. Apparently it was the 175th anniversary of the countries volunteer fire service.

IMG_7891

Which gave us a free show of the Finnish version of pomp and ceremony outside the huuuuuuge cathedral.

IMG_7902

After a glance inside we ran off towards the castle which almost caused us to throw the gps outta the window in frustration.

IMG_7981

Seriously Turku!? You would think something as…oh….I dunno as impressive as a castle would warrant directional signs but noooooooooooo

IMG_8145

Calming down we ran into the stunning inner courtyard and tried in vain to make profile pic portraits.

IMG_8094

Ville caught me posing like a nutter in an attempt to use Sheila’s camera.

Word to the wise:

Never let your guard down when one of your best friends’ hubby is taking your photo lest you get these:

IMG_8116

We finished our walk down the marina and in feeling sleepy and in my case super limpy we went home.

IMG_8174

The next morning we said goodbye in person for hopefully only a year and I didn’t cry…well…didn’t cry too much….dangit not gonna cry now.

Love ya Sheila and thanks for the staycation!

You're welcome!
Love the photos - especially the one of Onyx in the boat and the two of us in Turku castle. I had a lovely time, Finland is gorgeous and the churches in particular were beautiful! I see Rosie snuck in as well! Hope I can come again next year, but, man, I need to lose weight before I let you take my photo again!

Love you too, Sheila
